Everything it does

The whole list, marked honestly

50 capabilities. 14 of them work today, 2 are being written, and 34 are decided and not started. Every row below says which.

Four things the others do not do

Every established payroll product in this category has the same four gaps. Closing them is most of why this exists. All four are planned rather than built — intending to do something nobody else does is not doing it.

  • Location-verified clock-inPlanned

For field and site teams: a clock-in that records where it happened, so hours for work done away from a desk are verifiable without a second product bolted on.

  • Reviews and compensation planningPlanned

Performance and pay decisions in the same place as the pay itself, rather than in a separate product that has to be reconciled by hand.

  • Employees outside the USPlanned

Actual employees abroad, not just contractors — the thing every US payroll product tells you to go and buy somewhere else. The architecture carries country packs from the first line of code.

  • Open API and webhooksPlanned

Every integration we build is built on the same public API you get. If we have not connected the tool you use, you are not stuck waiting for us to.

Everything, by area

Grouped the way the work is actually organised. See which plan each one lands in.

Getting set up

  • Guided company set-up

    Works today

Eleven steps in the order they actually depend on each other, each one saying how long it takes and why it is needed before you start it.

  • Set-up that adapts to your answers

    Works today

Four questions at the start change the checklist. Say this is your first payroll and a fifteen-minute step disappears entirely.

  • Addresses checked as you type

    Works today

Real addresses offered while you type, then verified as deliverable against the postal service rather than merely tidied up.

  • Your own logo on your company

    Works today

Upload it once and it appears everywhere the company does — the switcher, the sidebar, and every document that carries your name.

  • Works properly on a phone

    Works today

Not a shrunken desktop. Every screen is built for a 390-pixel phone first, because that is where a lot of this actually gets done.

Running payroll

  • Weekly, fortnightly, twice-monthly or monthly pay

    Works today

Pick the first period and the first pay day; every date after it is worked out for you, including the deadline to approve by.

  • The deadline, not just the pay day

    Works today

Money takes business days to move, so every pay date carries the date you have to approve by, worked backwards through weekends and non-banking days.

  • More than one pay schedule

    Works today

Salaried staff monthly and hourly staff fortnightly, in the same company.

  • Run payroll

    Being built

Every figure opens into the arithmetic behind it, and nothing is submitted until you approve exactly what you were shown.

  • Run payroll from your phone

    Planned

The whole run — review, the arithmetic behind each number, and the approval — on a phone, with the same password re-entry as anywhere else.

  • Off-cycle and correction runs

    Planned

A bonus, a correction or a final pay outside the normal schedule.

  • Deadline reminders, automatically

    Planned

A nudge before an approval deadline, and a nudge to your team before an enrolment window closes, so nobody has to chase anybody.

Tax and compliance

  • Federal and state tax filing

    Planned

Filed on time from the figures you approved, through a licensed filing partner. Acting as your reporting agent is a status granted by the tax authorities, not something software can assert.

  • Withholding from a vetted provider

    Planned

Tax figures come from an authoritative provider under contract. We will never guess at a rate, and a rate we cannot verify is shown as unavailable rather than estimated.

  • W-2s and 1099s at year end

    Planned

Prepared, filed and delivered to the people they belong to.

  • Multi-state work locations

    Works today

People working in more than one state, recorded properly from the start.

  • Reasonable salary calculator

    Planned

What an owner-operator should pay themselves, shown with the reasoning and the sources rather than as a number to take on faith.

  • S corp election and compliance

    Planned

The election itself, the deadlines attached to it, and the owner self-pay that has to follow from it.

Benefits and retirement

  • Health, dental and vision

    Planned

Choose a plan that fits your budget and headcount, enrol your team, and have the deductions come out of payroll on their own.

  • 401(k) for your team

    Planned

Set up through a licensed provider, enrolled from the same screen as everything else, deducted from payroll automatically and reconciled against the ledger.

  • Solo 401(k)

    Planned

The owner-only plan, with employee and employer contributions both handled, and the deduction flowing straight through payroll.

  • Health reimbursement

    Planned

Reimburse premiums and medical costs without running your own scheme.

  • Bring an existing plan across

    Planned

If you already offer benefits, the plan moves with you rather than being rebuilt.

Time

  • Time tracking that feeds payroll

    Planned

Hours recorded once and carried into the run, with no re-keying and nothing to import.

  • Time off and accruals

    Planned

Requests, approvals and balances, with accrual that matches what you actually promised.

  • Location-verified clock-in

    PlannedNobody else

For field and site teams: a clock-in that records where it happened, so hours for work done away from a desk are verifiable without a second product bolted on.

  • Job and project costing

    Planned

Hours attributed to the job they were worked on, and carried into your accounts.

Hiring and onboarding

  • People enter their own details

    Being built

Their address, tax elections and bank details come from them, not from you typing them off a form on your desk. Nobody should be the custodian of a mistake they cannot check.

  • Offer letters and onboarding checklists

    Planned

A new starter walked through their own first week, without a folder of paperwork.

  • Signing, online

    Planned

Documents signed and stored where they belong, rather than emailed round and lost.

  • Document storage

    Planned

Everything about a person, in one place, for as long as you have to keep it.

For the people you pay

  • Self-service for your team

    Planned

Payslips, tax documents, time off and a change of address — done by the person themselves, which is fewer emails for you and faster for them.

  • Payslips and year-end documents

    Planned

Available the moment they exist, and explained rather than merely itemised.

  • Reviews and compensation planning

    PlannedNobody else

Performance and pay decisions in the same place as the pay itself, rather than in a separate product that has to be reconciled by hand.

Money out

  • Direct deposit

    Planned

Through a licensed money-movement partner. Moving money needs a licence, not more code, and nothing here moves until that is signed.

  • Contractor payments

    Planned

Unlimited, with 1099s prepared and filed at the end of the year.

  • Bill pay and invoicing

    Planned

Send an invoice and pay a bill without leaving the thing that already knows your books.

  • Contractors outside the US

    Planned

Paid in their own currency, with the paperwork their country expects.

  • Employees outside the US

    PlannedNobody else

Actual employees abroad, not just contractors — the thing every US payroll product tells you to go and buy somewhere else. The architecture carries country packs from the first line of code.

Reports and integrations

  • Reports, as PDF or CSV

    Planned

Payroll registers, contributions, agency payments, bank transactions, year-to-date, time-off balances — filtered how you need them and downloadable.

  • Accounting export

    Planned

Journals that match your chart of accounts, out of a ledger that already balances.

  • Integrations with what you already use

    Planned

Accounting, time, and the tools your team is already in.

  • Open API and webhooks

    PlannedNobody else

Every integration we build is built on the same public API you get. If we have not connected the tool you use, you are not stuck waiting for us to.

Control and records

  • Roles and permissions

    Works today

A bookkeeper who can see payroll but not approve it; a manager who only sees their own team.

  • Password again before anything moves money

    Works today

So a borrowed open laptop is not enough to pay somebody or change where pay goes.

  • Append-only audit trail

    Works today

Who changed what, when, and from where. It cannot be quietly edited afterwards.

  • Double-entry ledger underneath

    Works today

Balance enforced by the database rather than by the code writing to it, in whole cents throughout.

  • Several companies under one account

    Works today

Switch between them without signing out, with nothing shared across the boundary.

Help

  • Support from someone who knows payroll

    Planned

On every plan, including the free one.

  • A named person to call

    Planned

The same one each time, who already knows your set-up.

Read the status markers, not the length of the list

PayRole cannot pay anyone, file anything, or produce an authoritative tax figure today. Moving money needs a licensed partner and filing needs a status granted by the tax authorities — neither is a matter of writing more code. Any payroll figure you see comes from a clearly labelled sandbox simulation and must not be used to pay a person or to make a decision with money attached.

Go and look at the parts that work

Set up a company and add your team in about an hour, spread over as many sittings as you like. Nothing is paid to anyone and nothing is filed.
